Two Important Truths

Scripture, 1 Corinthians 8-9
Take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumbling block to them that are weak. (1 Cor. 8:9)

Two points of view contained in 1 Corinthians 8 and 9, taken together, help wrap up this package of truth. The first is found in 1 Corinthians 8:13: "If meat make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to offend." The key words here are my brother. The second is found in 1 Corinthians 9:27: "I keep under my body (the Greek word here is a prizefighter's term meaning to beat black and blue, and bring it under subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway." The key words here are I myself. What is the relationship between these verses?

Your responsibility as a follower of our blessed Lord is twofold: first, to make sure that you place no stumbling block n the way of your Christian brothers and sisters. In other words, your conduct should edify the family of God. Second, your attitude toward every matter of choice not clearly revealed in Scripture should be one that keeps your ministry to others untarnished. Beware: it's possible to be disapproved and set on a shelf, even after you have been successfully busy in God's work.

Small thought here
Put these two concepts together and God's will is certain. I am responsible to my brother-to encourage him rather than to discourage him, to build him up rather than to tear him down, to guide his footsteps rather than to cause him to stumble. And I am responsible to myself-to keep on becoming the man or woman God planned me to be.
