Hair Was His Hang-Up
Scripture, 2 Samuel 14:25-18:33
Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel. (2 Sam. 15:6)
It's interesting that the very thing of which Absalom was so proud-his beautiful hair-at last became his undoing. The text says that there was no one in Israel to be so much praised as Absalom for his beauty (14:25). He was the glamour boy of his day. Not only that, Absalom knew something about press agentry and public relations. He prepared chariots and horses and fifty men to run before him and rose up early and stood beside the way of the gate. When anyone had a problem, Absalom would say, "If I were king, you'd get a better shake." Sheer politics. Absalom also knew how to conspire. The conspiracy against his father lasted twenty years and eventually succeeded. Finally when David was run out of town, ambitious Absalom proclaimed himself king. But then his chicanery backfired. The beauty of which he was so proud became his undoing, as did his politics. And God brought him down to an untimely death-hung by his hair in an oak tree, there to be finished off by General Joab.
Small thought here
The Bible is filled with stories of people who failed because they refused to correct their besetting sins. Greed was never corrected in Lot's life. Lust was never corrected in Samson's. Ambition was never mastered in Absalom's. Watch out for the besetting sin that has never been left at the Cross.
