Examples We Can Follow
Scripture, 1 Corinthians 10:1-14
Now all these things happened . . . and they are written for our admonition. (1 Cor. 10:11)
God's Word is so plain. That's why I think it's to our criticism and sometimes to our shame that we try to make it difficult to ascertain His will. Today's text clearly says that the wilderness journey of the Israelites still serves as an example for you and me in our journey to heaven. What can we learn from this forty-year sojourn?
First, we should not desire evil things (10:6). Don't go on wanting something you know is not really the will of God. Many years ago I remember a church member asking me rather naively, "Well, Pastor, couldn't I just divorce my husband and marry this other man and then ask God to forgive me?" No, friend, it doesn't work that way. Second, we should put nothing in God's place (10:7). You don't have to have a little tin god on the shelf to be an idolator. People make idols out of money, things, pleasure, success, and other people. Putting anything or anyone in place of God is sin. Third, we should not become victims of moral breakdown (10:8). Even if the world around you is giving in, don't make the same fatal step. It cost 23,000 Israelites their lives. Fourth, we should not tempt God (10:9). Don't say, "Well, I'll see if I can get away with this." God cannot be fooled. Finally, we should no complain or murmur (10:10). Complaining is in the same league with idolatry, evil desires, and moral breakdown and its consequence is also the same.
Small thought here
Let me say it again: the history of God's ancient people is given to you and me as an example-so we won't make the same mistakes they made. But let's not stay in a spiritual vacuum. Let's replace these negative traits with a desire for what is good, a wholehearted love of God, moral purity, and contentment.
